The Heartbreak
I should be proud of this team. This collaboration of Soda and Music, of Pop and Melody. It is pretty much impossible to not look back at this team, from anyone's perspective, and think they were not a success. Three time playoff team, making the semis every year. 23 wins versus 12 losses. They beat some very good teams along their way including a great Mesopotatema team in Pop's very first year.

The team is also a record setting team. They were involved in the highest scoring game in HGC or CHG league history, unfortunately on the losing end, but still, holding a record that will be very tough to beat. They scored 7 TDs in a game twice, which I believe has not been done before. Speaking of TDs, Crush Cadence will leave as the current TD king, with 51 over the course of 35 games. He sits at second in total SPPs at 167. As a rare Elf one turn piece, he proved to be a threat, even after an agility break made me question if he should stay on the team.

Crush also earned player of the year in his sophomore season, and I coach of the year for my first year performance with the team. With all that, my best coaching and Crush's best performance was probably the last four regular season games and first playoff game of season 2, Needing to win out to make the playoffs, the Melody scored 21 TDs in those 5 games, and then took a previous champ Badditude team to overtime in the semis.

This year I mostly lived up to expectations. My two regular season losses were to a Vampire team when I didn't have Crush, and to a goblin throw in overtime. I came in as the second seed, and finished the year in the same way. I should be proud, I should be happy, I should be able to look back on the memories with joy. And I hope to one day do so, but for now, all I can think is I blew my chance. That this was the team I'd make a championship game with, this was a perfect combination of skills and boosts, and I failed. Whether it be through coaching or dice, I came up short with a very very good team (and against a very very good team). So I hope I can love the Melody again, but for now, the notes sure sound sour.

Bye Bye Bye
Ok, so the win actually only got them one bye, but the Melody were singing a happy tune against WAARGH, finishing the season on a strong note, and clinching a first round bye in the playoffs.

WAARGH received first, and as was the story through the game, just couldn't knock enough elves over, let alone break their armor. Kick Key was able to maneuver around and tackle the ball carrier, and then Coke went to work. Leaping into two tackle zones, picking up the ball, dodging multiple times, going for it a few times and throwing a long bomb to Crush, and a turn later Pop was on the board.

A common theme for the Melody would be knocking the ball loose, while Crush waited patiently deep in the opponents territory, eventually getting the ball for a score, as they would do that one more time in the first half.

The second half started with a one turn score by Crush, and the game was all but over. WAARGH got the ball, caged up and slowed advanced, but the elves were able to stall them, before eventually conceding a score.

Right before WAARGH went in for the TD, an eclipse over took the field. It last long enough, that everyone forgot who they were, so Crush was denied another one turn score. However, the Melody did still manage to complete a pass while the eclipse hung over the field. When all cleared up, Pop would find Crush one more time, who would get his 4th TD of the game, 20th of the year, and 50th of his decorated career.

The Elves now wait to see who they will face in the semifinals, and see if they can game plan a way to a championship birth.

Those Bumbling Elves
Starlite came in with momentum, and a lot of inducements, and that proved enough to trip up the Melody. The Second Stringers managed to grind out a long drive to score, and then with 2 turns remaining, the Melody's Coke couldn't find his feet on a leap, leaving the half over with Crush still holding the ball.

Down to start the second half, the highly partisan crowd decided they wanted things evened up, so they threw all manor of items onto the pitch, knocking all but two of the Second Stringers over. In their zealousness, they accidentally hit Crush, so his one turn score was not an option. Pop was still able to pick up the ball, get it to Sunkist, who would score three turns later.

The Melody was able to muck up the field after that, and Pibb had the ball deep in enemy territory, but was knocked down. Starlite was unable to corral the ball, so it gave Pibb a second chance. He got ahead of himself thinking of the dodges to come, and forgot to pick up the ball. So it was time to head to overtime.

The Stringers received, and some poor strategy by the Elves and some nice moves by a goblin, and Pop Melody walked off of the field losers for the second time this season. The overtime loss does still allow the Melody to control their own destiny in the last game, if they win, they would clinch a bye in the first round of the playoffs. So the bashers of Waargh will step onto the pitch, with playoff implications on the line. Let's see if the Melody can sing a sweeter tune this time around.
